What Your Eyes Say About Your Health

YourEyes

By Jordan & Kyla Miller

I’m sure most of you have heard the expression, ‘your eyes are the window to your soul’. Well, in fact, not only are they the window to our soul, but they are also important indicators of our overall health.

Eyes have many signs that tell us what is happening in our bodies. Unfortunately, given the ‘polluted’ world we live in today, many of our bodies are loaded with toxins. As a result of this toxic load, there are many physical characteristics that present themselves over time. Sickness presents itself in many interesting ways, and for the eyes, there are several indicators as to what is going wrong or right with the body. Everything is connected in the body.

When something is not operating well, there are physical signs (sometimes invisible) that help us determine what is plaguing us. The problem today is that many of us have lost this ancient knowledge. Many of us turn to a medical professional for the answers because we don’t know any better, and they have been deemed the experts by society. The fact is that you have the power to be your own expert, as nobody knows your body better than yourself. To get you started, we have provided you with some tell-tale physical signs the eyes manifest when your body is sick.

Dark Circles Under Eyes

Some believe that dark circles under the eyes is an indication that one is not getting adequate sleep, by staying up watching too much T.V. or simply just appear if we misbehave (excessive partying) or are under a great deal of stress. In some other groups, dark circles are believed to be caused as a direct result of too much potassium in the diet; this may be true, but we haven’t seen much evidence on this. Simply speaking, dark circles under your eyes is directly related to oxidizing hemoglobin. In other words, they manifest as a result of “leaky capillaries” and are visible due to the thin skin that covers the area under your eyes. Essentially, what this boils down to is that there is an issue with your liver; it is not working optimally. This may be due in part to genetics, allergies, or iron deficiency – all usually caused by what we are or are not ingesting.

“Bags” Under Eyes

“Bags” or puffy eyes are usually present as a result of accumulated fat around the eye area. This happens when the septum surrounding the eyeball weakens, causing the outer layer of fat within the socket to sink forward – making it look like you have literal “bags” under your eyes. The underlying cause behind this phenomena is an issue with your kidneys. Essentially, if your kidneys are not effectively cleaning toxins out of your body, physical signs will begin to manifest themselves, especially in and around the eyes. Some other studies suggest that puffiness is also an indicator of too much salt in the diet.

Sunken Eyes

This is a common symptom in our society today. It is by no accident that many of us are suffering from it. Sunken eyes is usually the cause of a dehydrated body. Many are ingesting several coffees, pop/soda, or pre-packaged fruit juices daily, without even knowing that each of these ‘beverages’ have a diuretic effect and are severely dehydrating. Couple this with drinking little water, you have a body that is starved of water, and thus it is unable to function properly. By increasing your intake of water and decreasing the amount of diuretic beverages you drink in a day, it is almost guaranteed that you will see positive results immediately.

Yellow Eyes

This manifests itself when the white of your eye (sclera) turns yellow. This is usually a sign of jaundice, where there is a buildup of bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is a yellow-colored pigment that is produced by the breakdown of old red blood cells. Bilirubin is normally processed by the liver and released into the intestine in bile before being excreted from the body through the feces. As you have probably guessed it, the common cause of yellow eye is directly related to a liver problem. A daily dose of fresh squeezed beet or lemon juice should help resolve the discoloration in a few weeks.

Bulging Eyes

Also known as proptosis or exophthalmos, bulging of the eyes manifests itself due to a condition with the thyroid gland. Both eyes generally protrude in people whom have Graves disease (an autoimmune disease indicating an overactive thyroid). In Graves disease, swelling, fibrosis and scarring may occur within the eye muscles surrounding the eye. This crowds the bony orbit where the eye sits, causing the eyes to bulge forward. In some rare cases however, it may mean that there is a benign tumor that exists behind the eye.

Double Vision

Double vision generally occurs when the eyes are misaligned. There may be several reasons why someone may be experiencing this condition; for example, they may have a cornea problem (due to infection or scars), lens problem (cataracts), muscle problem (graves disease or myasthenia gravis), nerve problem (multiple sclerosis or uncontrolled diabetes) or brain problem (strokes or migraine headaches).

Blood Vessels

Your eyes are one of the few areas of the body that have exposed blood vessels. For this reason, these blood vessels can tell us a lot about the individuals health. In some cases, inflamed blood vessels in your eye can be the direct result of an irritant, allergy, or in some cases a viral infection. In other cases however, it has been shown that a continued state of inflamed blood vessels can be directly related to more serious issues such as hypertension or diabetes.

As you can see, the eyes provide us with many indicators about our health. When you are suffering from a health related issue, take a look in the mirror, and determine whether or not you can pinpoint the problem by gazing into your eyes. These are but a few examples of what we can look for when trying to figure out some of the issues we are experiencing with our eyes.

8 Ways to Use Your Mind to Live Longer

by Self Magazine

Fret Less

To banish worries, put stressors on paper. Writing them down and stashing the note in a “worry jar” (or a drawer) makes it easier to compartmentalize and move on, says Andrea Bonior, Ph.D., a psychologist in Washington, D.C. Limiting anxiety is healthy. A surfeit of the stress hormone cortisol may lead to chronic pain, depression, cognitive issues and even heart problems, potentially shortening your life. Not to mention that constant worry is no fun.

Keep Your Sunny Side Up

Optimists live longer, plain and simple. In a 15-year study of more than 100,000 women, cheery types were 14 percent less likely to die in an eight-year period than gloomy gals were, the National Institutes of Health Women’s Health Initiative finds. To change your thinking, visualize a happy moment: “Imagining yourself in a hammock on the beach can have an immediate, relaxing effect on the body that makes it more difficult to stay focused on the negative,” Bonior says.

If All Else Fails, Take a Nap

When life starts getting you down, catch 40 winks. If you’re stressed out, a 45-minute daytime snooze may lower your blood pressure, a study from Allegheny College reports. Siestas also help you catch up on much-needed sleep. That’s crucial, because chronic sleep deprivation can cause aging at the cellular level. So give yourself permission to nap like a kid. We predict you’ll start feeling like one, too.

Your Relaxation Rx

Which mind/body treatments have the most rock-solid science backing them up? Brent Bauer, M.D., director of the Complementary and Integrative Medicine Program at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, provides the big picture.

For: Back pain Try: Yoga

For: High cholesterol Try: Qigong

For: Depression Try: Music therapy, qigong, yoga

For: Eating disorders Try: Meditation, yoga

For: Fertility Try: Visualization, yoga

For: Joint pain Try: Music therapy, qigong, yoga

For: Migraines Try: Acupuncture, yoga

The Science

The latest cutting-edge research proves your mind can heal your body. Here’s how:

Your body dials down stress. Dr. Benson’s research has found that mind/body practices—meditation, yoga, tai chi, deep breathing, visualization—all elicit the relaxation response, quelling the release of stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline. Your heart slows, blood pressure falls and digestion eases.

Your immunity soars. The relaxation response causes cells to release micropuffs of nitric oxide, a gas that dilates blood vessels and stabilizes the immune system, Dr. Benson reported in Medical Science Monitor. Mind/body methods worked as well as drugs designed to do the same thing, without the side effects.

Your genes change. Here’s the real slap-your-forehead news: In a study in PLoS ONE, Dr. Benson compared the genes of 38 people, half of whom meditated regularly and half of whom never did. Controlling for other factors, he found that genes associated with stress-related illness behaved differently in the two groups. “These genes control not only stress but also premature aging and inflammation,” he says. It seems meditators’ genes were essentially telling their body to stress less and age more slowly.

Healing Crisis: What is it really?

I am posting this blog about healing crisis for my clients. When I put them on a detailed detox or body cleanse program most experience a “Healing Crisis”. This blog will enlighten them of what a healing crisis is all about so that they don’t panic.

Introduction to A Healing Crisis
An increasing number of people today are trying alternative healing methods to cleanse and detoxify their bodies. Simple methods such as switching to a natural food diet, juicing to increase nutrition, or fasting are used to cleanse the body of stored toxins in the hopes of naturally addressing long-standing symptoms such as chronic headaches, adult acne, allergies or arthritis. More intensive methods may be used to perform cleansing of the body’s elimination organs: colon, kidney and liver. However, many people trying these and other alternative health cleansing methods discontinue them when they experience new symptoms of ill health. Generally, these new symptoms are in actuality not a new disease or malady affecting the body, but rather a healing crisis.

Healing Crisis Defined
A healing crisis is when symptoms from diseases and toxins that are released during a detoxification process manifest themselves. Also known as “Herxheimer Reaction”, a healing crisis occurs when toxins stored in the body are released at a faster rate than can be properly eliminated. The more toxic one’s body is, the more severe the detoxification and the more intense the reaction.

A healing crisis is characterized by a temporary increase in symptoms during a cleansing or detoxification process. Such symptoms may be mild or severe, depending on the body’s original toxicity, but are definitely temporary. They can occur immediately, within several days, or even several weeks of a cleansing program.

Reverse Order
What is not immediately intuitive is that symptoms are experienced in the reverse order of when the body was originally exposed to their cause. This simple explanation may help demonstrate the reason.

Assume that every year you painted your walls a different color. As time went on, you layered color upon color. Finally after 30 years, you found that the newest paint was not sticking properly because layers of paint underneath were cracking and coming off. So you decided to strip all of the paint off the walls and give it a fresh coat of paint. As you started stripping off paint, you saw earlier layers. In the process of cleaning and stripping the walls, you got glimpses of what your walls were like and what they went through in prior years.

Believe it or not, human bodies work in a similar fashion. As bodies store fat, the chemistry of the fat reflects the internal body conditions at the time the fat was stored. Each year, a residue of the viruses, bacteria and toxins you were exposed to were stored in fatty deposits.

Similar to the paint stripping analogy, as a body is cleansed, stored toxins, bacteria, and viruses are released. As they are released, symptoms experienced with the particular malady or event associated with the toxin are re-experienced – albeit in a milder form.

Possible Symptoms
A healing crisis can have a variety of possible symptoms, depending on what the body underwent during the initial toxic encounter. Symptoms can include:

  • muscle cramps or pain
  • arthritic flair ups
  • diarrhea
  • extreme fatigue
  • restlessness
  • headaches
  • insomnia
  • sinus congestion
  • fever
  • skin eruptions
  • strong emotions or mood swings

Suggested Treatment
During a healing crisis, it is important that the cleansing program be continued. Continued cleansing will help the body rid itself of released toxins and diseases forever. Following these simple steps may help to relieve some of the symptoms of the healing crisis.

  • Drinking plenty of fresh water helps the body eliminate released toxins.
  • Increasing fiber intake and taking supplements to cleanse the colon and kidneys will also help to accelerate the elimination of toxins.
  • If fatigued, give the body rest
  • Meditation can help to manage symptoms such as strong emotions and mood swings

The Health Benefits of Bentonite Clay

Bentonite clay has been used for healing purposes since before recorded history. It is made from a mixture of volcanic ash and sea mud. It draws toxic material out of the body if taken internally, and it reduces pain and infection in open wounds. Clay molecules carry negative ions in its minerals, which attract positive ions located in impurities found in the intestinal tract. In a process called adsorption, the clay draws the impurities

What Bentonite Does

Bentonite stimulates unhealthy organs and body tissues, helping these tissues regain function. There are highly active ingredients in bentonite clay which binds to itself like a magnet and holds on to them until the body can eliminate both. restore cells and hasten healing and normal body function. Bentonite acts like a magnet, pulling itself toward and attracting toxins in the intestinal tract when it is consumed. It has been used to help with food allergies, intestinal mucous issues, colitis and intestinal viruses and can inhibit parasite reproduction. Bentonite Clay has been used to draw out poisons from insect and animal bites and to draw infection out of open wounds. It has even been used to draw out toxins from radiation treatments. According to the Journal of Physical Chemistry, 16 studies have shown the electromagnetic or electrochemical properties of bentonite clay and its ability to bind with electricity found in cells. The Biodesign Institute at Arizona State University found that “healing clay” was effective against MRSA infections. The Mayo Clinic defines MRSA, or methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, as “a strain of staph that’s resistant to the broad-spectrum antibiotics commonly used to treat it.” MRSA is potentially fatal.
  • Bentonite clay posseses a negative charge, and most poisons in your body have positives. Once you consume bentonite clay, it attaches itself to harmful toxins, bacteria and impurities. As with the food you eat, it can take a couple of days for your body to process and discard the waste. Bentonite clay will not be absorbed by your body and will come out as if it were the waste your body couldn’t break down. As the material is making its way through your body, it is constantly attaching itself to these toxins and taking them with it when it is deposited in the toilet.

The Clay Cure

  • In “The Clay Cure: Natural Healing From The Earth,” author Ran Knishinsky offers a lot of information on bentonite and other forms of healing clay. Knishinsky discusses how to choose the right kind of clay, the science involved and the many uses for this dietary supplement. The book describes when and how to take clay as a powder, a liquid gel or in capsules. Knishinsky details health benefits of bentonite, such as treating digestive ailments, benefiting circulation, helping with menstrual problems and aiding the liver and prostate.

There are specific people who should refrain from the use of this substance. Women who are pregnant and senior citizens shouldn’t consume bentonite clay or products that contain the material. You should also avoid taking bentonite clay within two hours of consumption of any medicine, including supplements.

Couch Potatoes Have Higher Risk of Having A Heart Attack After Sex

Sex and exercise can trigger heart attacks in older people who don’t get much of either, a new analysis finds. The risk is low, but it’s a good reminder that slackers should change their exercise habits gradually, especially in middle age.

People who exercise regularly have a much smaller risk of having a heart attack immediately after sexual or physical activity, said lead author Dr. Issa Dahabreh of Tufts Medical Center in Boston.

“It would be really bad if someone thought our paper means people should not exercise,” Dahabreh said. “If anything, it’s the opposite.”

The analysis, appearing in Wednesday’s Journal of the American Medical Association, combined results from 14 studies involving more than 6,000 patients.

The studies involved only people who’d had heart attacks or had died suddenly from a heart problem. The studies looked at what the people were doing during the hour or two before their heart attacks and compared that to the same people’s activity on normal days with no major heart problems.

That study design is used to try to answer the question, “Why did the heart attack occur now?”

Physical activity and sex increased the risk of heart attack by a factor of about three, according to the analysis of the pooled results. Exercise increased the risk of sudden cardiac death by nearly five times. The researchers didn’t find a triggering relationship between sex and sudden cardiac death, that is, a sudden death from a heart problem.

The risk for any one person is extremely low.

“If you were to follow 10,000 people for a year and if they all decided to increase their physical activity by an hour a week, you could expect to see two to three more heart attacks,” Dahabreh said.

That risk is offset for most people by the benefits of exercise. The more frequently people exercise, in general, the less risk they have of exercise or sex triggering a heart attack.

Most of the patients in the studies were in their late 50s and early 60s, but the findings are a cautionary tale for people in any age group who are slowing down.

Exercise might even be considered cross-training for sex, said Mercedes Carnethon, a heart disease researcher at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, who wasn’t involved in the research.

“Engaging in regular physical activity is a requirement for maintaining a long, safe, healthy sex life,” Carnethon said.

“If this isn’t more motivation for people to maintain some degree of physical activity, I’m not sure what is,” Carnethon said. “Get out and walk. Do something.”
