7 Ways to Get Rid of the Refined Sugar Habit

By

Increased consumption of sugar has been linked to some serious health issues such as heart diseases and cancer besides the obvious weight issues. It is also believed that our brain releases dopamine which helps to keep our body happy. However, the fact is that every person has unique physical needs. For example, many people do not prefer consuming sweets even in moderation because they don’t feel the urge to have them. However, contrarily, other people constantly nibble on sweet food because their bodies want so.

The dangers of consuming excessive sugar cannot be overlooked which is why we bring for you some incredible ways to get rid of consuming refined sugar:

1. Stop Drinking Sodas and Sweetened Drinks

All soft drinks contain huge quantities of sugar content in them. You consume around 10 teaspoons of sugar in a 12 ounce can. If you can stop drinking these soft drinks you can easily lose a lot of fat. Also, try getting rid of candies and cakes, as these contain the highest amount of sugar and carbohydrates both of which are dangerous for your health.

2. Avoid Consuming or Buying Packaged Foods

All sorts of organic packaged food are rich in sugar content. It is much better to prepare your own snacks such as homemade popcorns over the stovetop. You can even consume raw fruits and vegetables as snacks.

3. Choose Wisely When Eating Out

Whenever you choose to eat out, avoid desserts that are prepared using sugar. Instead, go for desserts prepared using fresh fruit and natural sweeteners such as honey. Prefer fruit smoothies, fruit salads, and other salads prepared using less sugar content and healthy dressings.

4. Try Going Sugar-Free At Least for a Week

This could be the best way to know how much sugar content your body needs on average. Go sugar-free for at least a week so your body starts adapting to the dietary change. This will help you gain a lot of confidence as well.

5. Deal with Sugar Cravings

Succumbing to sugar cravings is the major reason why people collect so much fat around their bodies. You can deal with sugar cravings by opting for foods that have natural sources of sugar. Consume fresh fruit when you wish to eat a bar of chocolate, for example.

6. Restrict You Daily Sugar Intake

You can control a lot of sugar intake by restricting your consumption to up to 2 teaspoons of sugar each day. You can either consume these two teaspoons of sugar at breakfast, during lunch or with snacks at any other time of the day.

7. Enjoy Other Food That You Like

Prepare meals that you like as a substitute for sugar laden food. You can always have healthy yet tasty meals every day. For example, roasted portobello mushrooms  toast nuts, roast squash, prepare dish salad, cook soups and stews, etc. There are several other foods that you can enjoy as well.

Seven Amazing Medicinal Properties of the Banana Plant

By Sayer Ji from Wake Up World

There is much more than meets the eye with the banana. A household favorite, a lost-leader at the grocery store, a metaphor for psychiatric problems, a mainstay of comic slap stick, the banana has woven itself deeply into human affairs, on both gut and mental levels. And this relationship is at least 10,000 years old, as far as conscious human cultivation of the species goes.

But, many do not realize that the banana is more than just an exceptionally starch-rich fruit, but has a complex biochemistry, with pharmacologically active properties. Bananas actually contain the catecholamines dopamine[i] and norepinephrine, the very same adrenal hormones released in the human body when it undergoes the typical “fight-or-flight” response. It is believed that the banana plant uses the biosynthetic pathway for catecholamines when under the stress of attack to fight off infectious pathogens such as in crown rot disease. Some varieties excrete a form of serotonin in their sap,  and there is even mention in the biomedical literature of the discovery of the NSAID drug naproxen (trade name Aleve) within the banana cultivar Musa acuminate. Sound crazy? Well, that’s to be expected from a fruit we commonly associate with a state of unbridled madness.

But the banana has a secret second life. It has been observed slyly practicing medicine without a license, and indeed, seems readily equipped with the following nutritional “super powers”….

1. Green Banana Is Anti-Diarrhea

Before a banana is ripened, while it is in its green state, it contains starches which are resistant to digestion, but have been studied in combination with pectin to significantly reduce intestinal permeability and fluid loss in those suffering with bouts of diarrhea.  Even when used without pectin, green banana has been found to hasten recovery of acute and prolonged childhood diarrhea when managed at home in rural Bangladesh.

2. Banana Is Anti-Ulcer Activity

Banana powder has been studied to prevent ulcer formation induced by a variety of drugs, including aspirin, indomethacin, phenylbutazone, prednisolone, cysteamine, and histamine. Researchers have found that banana powder treatment not only strengthens mucosal resistance against ulcerogens but also promotes healing by inducing cellular proliferation. One of the anti-ulcer compounds identified within unripe banana is the flavonoid known as leucocyanidin, and which is particularly effective against aspirin-induced erosion.

3. Banana Peel Suppresses Prostate Gland Growth

Banana peel has been found to suppress testosterone-induced prostate gland enlargement.

4. Banana Stem Extract suppresses Oxalate Kidney Stones

A water extract of banana stem extract has been found to suppress the formation of oxalate-associated kidney stones in the animal model, leading researchers to conclude that it “may be a useful agent in the treatment of patients with hyperoxaluric urolithiasis.”

5. Banana Consumption Protects the Skin Against UV-Light Damage

UV-B light induced skin damage may be prevented or reduced through the consumption of bananas, with a protective effect against loss of skin elasticity.

6. Banana Has Anti-Diabetic Properties

Banana flower extract has been studied in a type 1 diabetic model, and has been found to have both antioxidant and blood sugar lowering effects. Banana root extracts have been discovered to contain blood sugar lowering properties comparable in efficacy to the drug glibenclamide (trade name Glyburide). Also, unripe banana contain starches resistant to hydrolysis and therefore beneficial to diabetics.

7. Banana Contains a Variety of Anti-Infective Compounds

Banana contains compounds with demonstrable anti-MRSA activity,  anti-HIV replicative activity, and following metabolic transformation by fungi, anti-leishmanicidal activity. The leaves of the plant are used in many centers in India during the care of patients with toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) and other extensive blistering disorders which can result in deadly sepsis in the absence of treatment.

Foods That Lower Diabetes Risk

By Erin Palinski RD

November is American Diabetes Month, which brings our attention to Type 2 diabetes — a devastating disease that is rising exponentially. Even children are now being diagnosed with what was thought to be only an “adult disease”.

For those of us who want to prevent diabetes, how can we eat in a way cut the risk and also whittle our middle? What if there were just a few easy superfoods that we can incorporate each day to not only drastically reduce our risk of diabetes, but shrink our waistline in the process? The good news is these foods do exist- and they even taste great!

In my newly released book, Belly Fat Diet for Dummies, I focus on specific foods, seasonings, and spices that have been shown in recent research to target the most dangerous of all fats — belly fat. The great news is that many of these superfoods not only burn up stubborn belly fat, they can actually help decrease insulin-resistance and lower blood sugar, helping to prevent and control diabetes!

FIRST, STOCK UP ON BLUEBERRIES

A University of Michigan Cardiovascular Center study found that when rats consumed just 2% of their calories from blueberries over a 90-day period, they significantly reduced their percentage of belly fat! And this tasty fruit has also been shown to reduce food cravings. This same study also showed a significant increase in insulin sensitivity as well as a decrease in triglyceride levels.

SECOND, BUY MORE BEANS

Beans are another great source, especially cannellini beans, since these contain one of the highest levels of resistance-starch (a fiber that resists digestion). This means your body has to work harder, and in turn burn more calories, to digest these, helping promote weight loss. In addition, the low glycemic index of these beans means they have a minimal impact on blood sugar levels. Add these into meals in replacement of higher glycemic index foods, like white rice, for better blood sugar control.

THIRD, GET NUTS

Out of all nuts, walnuts may just be the most effective at burning up belly fat and controlling diabetes. Walnuts are one of the best plant sources of omega-3 fatty acids. These fatty acids are not only strong anti-inflammatory nutrients, but they also help to regulate stress hormones such as cortisol. When stress hormones are elevated in your body, it causes your body to store more fat- specifically belly fat. Consuming a high level of omega-3 fatty acids in the diet can help prevent stress hormones from peaking, meaning less of these hormones are circulating in your body, and therefore you start to store less belly fat. In addition, walnuts can have a significant impact on reducing blood sugar. A recent study found that consuming nuts daily reduced A1c levels by as much as 8%. Another study found that walnuts helped to reduce fasting insulin levels. So sprinkle walnuts onto your salads, yogurt, or just snack on a handful a day for a smaller waist and improved blood sugar control.

FOURTH, GRAB HOT PEPPERS

If you like spicy foods, stock up on hot peppers! Rich in capsaicin, these peppers have a thermogenic effect on the body, boosting metabolism and calorie burn, helping to shed unwanted pounds, especially around the midsection. But that’s not their only benefit! A study found that consuming an increased amount of capsaicin for 10 weeks lowered obesity-induced insulin resistance in mice. So add these to everything from salads to chili. You can even use the ground or flaked form to season foods.

How to Make Apple Cups and Homemade Apple Cider

These are really much simpler than they look, and are such a charming way to enjoy your favorite apple cider!  The only requirements are some apples, a paring knife, and a spoon.  (Although if you have a melon baller, it’ll make the scooping slightly easier!)

Cute, delicious, and nutritious!

Apple Cider Cups Recipe

Ingredients:

  • large apples
  • lemon juice
  • apple cider, either homemade or storebought
  • optional: cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, allspice and/or star anise for garnish

Method:

On a cutting board or sturdy surface, use a knife to cut off the top of the apple.  Then take a paring knife and carefully outline where you’d like the “rim” of your apple cup to be.  (My rims were about 1/4″ wide.)  Use a spoon to carefully begin scooping out the center of your apple until you have a nice “cup”.  (A melon baller also works well for this.)

Also, if your apple doesn’t sit exactly level, take your paring knife and just slice off a few millimeters to even off the bottom to make it even.  Just be careful not to let your knife cut through the bottom or sides of the apple when hollowing it out, or the cider will leak out!

Once you have the inside of the apples hollowed out, brush a little lemon juice over the inside of the apples (to prevent browning).  Then fill with your favorite apple cider, garnish with cinnamon or spices if you’d like, and serve!

Bonus Tip:

You could also warm the apple cups in the oven before serving. DON’T  leave them in too long, or they will lose their firmness.

Homemade Apple Cider (Non-Alcoholic)

Ingredients:

8 -10 organic red apples

1/4 cup real maple syrup

4 tablespoons cinnamon (or 4 cinnamon sticks)

4 tablespoons allspice

Directions:

1. Quarter your apples (no need to remove peel or seeds).

2. In a large stock pot add your apples and fill with water–just enough to cover the apples.

3. Add maple syrup

4. Wrap your cinnamon and allspice in a doubled up cheese cloth and tie, and add this to the apples and water.

5. Boil on high for one hour (uncovered) checking on it frequently.

6. Turn down heat and let simmer for two hours (covered).

7. Take off the heat after two hours of simmering and let cool.

8. Remove spices and mash up the apples to a pulp like consistency (a potato masher works well for this).

9. Once cool pour into a strainer over a large bowl. When most of the juice has drained away, put the remainder of the pulp into a doubled up cheese cloth and squeeze over the bowl until no more juice comes out.

10. (At this point you can either restrain the juice to get out the little bits of pulp that remain with a cheese cloth draped inside the strainer to catch them or just leave it like I do).

11. You can store in an air tight container in your refrigerator for up to a week or you can freeze it for later use if you like.

FOR DIABETICS

** You could make this a diabetic recipe by omitting the maple syrup and adding stevia to taste in place of the sugar or none at all.**

Dead Doctors Don’t Lie – Diabetes

 By Dr. Joel D. Wallach, B.S., D.V.M., N.D.

Everybody knows someone with diabetes. It’s the number 3 cause of death in adults in the United States. And it has terrible complications and side-effects. Diabetes. The side-effects include blindness, of many kinds, then there is the kidney failure, with dialysis and kidney transplant, there’s cardiovascular disease of all kinds. And of course that contributes to the number 1 cause of death. Then there’s amputations, everybody ought to have one of those, cause they are totally paid for in your health thing, cause they assume that you’re not just going to get one cause you want to get everything on your health benefits. And then, you shorten your life, because if you have diabetes, on the average, you have a shorter life span than someone who doesn’t have diabetes. Now, we learned in 1957, in the animal industry, that we could prevent and cure diabetes with two trace minerals. That’s a pretty profound statement. We could prevent and cure diabetes with two trace minerals, in 1957, in animals, and it was published in Federation Proceedings, which is the official journal of American Science, the National Institute of Health. The official monthly journal, August, 1957. Today when your doctor gets a new diabetic patient, he drops to his knees and says, “Thank you, Lord! And he gets up and he runs to his phone and calls his real estate agent. Because everytime he gets a new diabetic patient, it represents $250,000 to him over a 20-30-40 year period. Because he knows that eventually you are going to go through that. And so he calls his real estate agent and says, “I need a new apartment complex. I need a small farm.” They all want strip malls. Kind of like monopoly, they all want strip malls. Well, the two trace minerals that you can get to prevent and cure this are chromium and vanadium.

Vanadium alone, according to the University of Vancouver, British Columbia Medical School, vanadium alone will replace insulin in adult onset diabetics, which represent 85% of all diabetics. Course they can’t quit their insulin cold turkey. They got to gradually lean off it, takes 4 to 6 months for most people to slowly wean off insulin, if they are taking in adequate amounts of chromium and vanadium. I’ve seen it work on hundreds and hundreds of people. Now to me this is criminal. Because if you write to Hills Packing Company that makes Science Diet dogfood (they’re right over here in Topeka, Kansas), they manufacture Science Diet dogfood and other Science Diet products, high tech foods for animals. If you write them and say,”How many minerals, exactly, is in Science Diet dogfood?” They’ll write back there’s 40 minerals. You write Checkerboard Square in St. Louis, Ralston Purina, and say “Just how many minerals are in your rat pellets for laboratory rats?” They’ll say there are 28 minerals. I’ll give anybody in this room a crisp new $100 bill if you can find me a human infant formula in a grocery store that has more than 11. So dogs get 40 minerals, now this is what Mike Murphy was saying “Dog never seem to get sick”, cause he’s getting this canned dog food with all these vitamins and minerals in there. So dogs get 40 minerals, rats get 28 minerals, and human infants get 11. Is that fair? No! Doesn’t matter if you’re talking about SMA, Similac, Isomilk, ProSoyB. In fact, that’s why they call Similac, cause it lacks everything.

Okay, if I’ve convinced you that you have to consciously take in all the minerals yourself, that you can’t depend on your food, and certainly you can’t depend on anything that’s boxed or packaged or bottled, there’s three types of minerals that you have to be concerned about. One is metallic minerals. Metallic minerals are essentially ground up rocks. Metallic minerals are things like oystershell, eggshell, dolomite, limestone, calcium carbonate, clays of various kinds, Mt. Meroulinite clay, seabed minerals, Tums. They’re only 8-12% absorbable, and when you reach age 35-40 it drops down to 3-5%.

I have to tell you a story here. Some of you heard this on the show today. I ran into a guy at a meeting like this up in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and this fellow owns a port-a-potty business. You know, that’s that green or blue colored out-house? Man, if we had only had one of those back when I was a kid. We had these ones with splinters, you know, in wood. At any rate, he said, “I see something that describes that in my port-a-potty business.” I said, “What’s that?” He says, “When we take those things back to the shop to clean them out with the pressure hose, we put a quarter inch grid underneath them because kids throw rocks and sticks and toys in there, and if we don’t put a grid there, it blocks up the sewer system and costs us thousands of dollars to fix it. Everytime we clean one of those out, we find hundreds of vitamin tablets.”

I said, “Well how do you know they are vitamin tablets?” He said, “That’s easy, right on the coating it says ‘Theragram-M, One-a-Day, Centrum.'” He takes me out into the back of the shop and there is this literal mountain of all these vitamin pills he got out of his porta-potty. And that’s because you can’t absorb metallic minerals. If you read the labels on those multiples, they say, “Your iron comes in the form of iron oxide”. What is iron oxide? Rust. You might as well go out to an old railroad track and take your butter knife and scrape some of that rust off and lick it. And you’re going to get your iron supplement. That’s what they’re giving you. I’ll show you how bad it is. If you take something like calcium lactate, which is a common metallic mineral, let’s say it’s a calcium tablet with calcium lactate, 1000 mg. If you take two of those, you’re not getting 2000mg of calcium. In fact, I have people all the time say, “Well, I took lots of calcium, Doc. I hear you on the radio all the time talking about calcium and arthritis, and I took 2000 mg calcium a day. Didn’t help my arthritis. In fact, it got worse.”

I said “What kind of calcium are you taking?” He said “Calcium lactate”. Well there is your problem, because only 250mg of that is metallic calcium. So let’s say you absorb 10% of that, then the other 750 mg is lactose or milk sugar. So 10% of 250 is 25, so if you take 2 of those you’re not getting 2000, you are getting 50mg. So to get what you need, you need to take 90 of those tablets a day. You need to take 30 with each meal, and you got 59 more minerals to go.

And there’s those people who want to do things naturally. Let’s see if you can do anything good with ten pounds of spinach. To be fair, let’s see if you can get 1000mg of magnesium. I picked magnesium because in green leafy vegetables, you have a lot of magnesium because of the chlorophyll. Part of the chlorophyll molecule. And any pound of anything you’ve got 454 grams and ten pounds of spinach you’ve got 540 grams, of which 97% is water. Let’s say you have 1 gram of chlorophyll, in that 10 pounds of spinach, that’s 50 mg of magnesium. You’ve got to divide that into the 1000 you want, you get a factor of 20, which you multiply times the 10. You have to eat 200 pounds of spinach, and you’ve got 58 more minerals to go. Okay?

So, you’ve got to be a pretty big person to accomplish all this. Even as big as I am you can’t get it done. So I prefer to supplement. Rather than do those things. Then, of course, during the ’60’s, the agricultural industry came up with chelated minerals. Chelated minerals, because farmers aren’t dumb enough to pay for a dollar of something that goes into an animal’s mouth and have 99 cents come out in the manure. So, I have to really thank farmers for being that clever, and chelated minerals are just metallic minerals with an amino acid or protein or enzyme wrapped around the metal atom, to increase the absorbability to 40%. Then the health-food industry jumped on that right away, because it is a major improvement in absorbability of minerals.
