Aspartame – Sweet Killer – It puts the DIE in Diet Soda

By Eddie Sage

Aspartame (E951) is an artificial sweetener, used in over 6000 products. The food industry claims that aspartame helps in losing weight, but why is obesity then becoming such an ever increasing problem?
Aspartame is a very sweet chemical, responsible for a host of health problems such as obesity, diabetes, cancer, brain diseases, migraines, ADHD, etc.

Aspartame breaks down into three toxic components:

1. Methanol – This is poisonous alcohol. In the body, methanol breaks down into formaldehyde, which is a poison.
2. Phenylalanine – This decreases the amount serotonin in your brain, which leads to mood swings (depressions) and an increased appetite! That is why aspartame is one of the main causes for the current obesity epidemic.
3. Aspartic acid – This is a neurological toxin comparable to MSG.

The US Department of Health has recorded 92 (!) symptoms following complaints about aspartame. In fact, over 80% of all complaints filed with FDA are related to aspartame consumption!

Some of the brand names for aspartame:
AminoSweet, NutraSweet, Equal, NatraTaste, Canderel, Spoonful, Equal-Measure, etc.

Aspartame is used in any of the following products:
Sugarfree, Light, Diet, Zero (Coke, Sprite & Fanta), Coke 007, Pepsi Max, Crystal Clear, Low-Calorie, Crystal Light, No Sugar Added, Smint, Stimorol Ice, Stimorol Fusion, Freedent, Mentos, Sportlife, etc.

Do no longer believe the lies of the food industry and the ‘main stream’ media. Contrary to what so-called ‘health experts’ claim, aspartame is NOT safe!

In fact, aspartame is a sweet poison developed to make people sick so the pharmaceutical industry can sell expensive medication to ‘treat’ the chronic diseases that are caused by it’s use.

Avoid this toxic chemical for 60 days and discover how your health will improve dramatically!

Shocking aspartame documentary ‘Sweet Misery’:

Other artificial sweeteners that you should avoid:
Acesulfame K (E950), Cyclamate (E952), Isomalt (E953), Saccharin (E954), Sucralose or Splenda (E955), Alitame (E956), Neohesperidine (E959), Neotame (E961), Salt of Aspartame-Acesulfame (E962), Maltitol (E965), Lactitol (E966), Sorbitol (E420), Mannitol (E421), Glycerol (E422).

Sweet misery

The researchers also noted that aspartame appears to cause excessive signaling of nerve cells, and nerve cell damage or even death. By disrupting the functioning of the cells’ mitochondria, or energy source, aspartame leads to a cascade of effects on the whole system.

“The energy systems for certain required enzyme reactions become compromised, thus indirectly leading to the inability of enzymes to function optimally,” the researchers wrote.

According to a research review conducted by South African scientists from the University of Pretoria and the University of Limpopo and published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, high intake of the artificial sweetener aspartame may lead to the degeneration of brain cells and various mental disorders.

 Same face, different name

Previous research was reviewed and it was found that aspartame, marketed as NutraSweet, Equal, Canderal and Tropicana Slim, leads to both direct and indirect changes in the brain when consumed in high quantities. It was found that the chemical can disrupt amino acid metabolism and structure, degrade nucleic acids, and interfere with the function of nerve cells and hormonal systems. It also appears to change the concentration of certain neurotransmitters in the brain.

Aspartame is used in more than 6,000 products around the world. It has been controversial since its introduction, with a number of studies linking it to cancer and neurological and behavioral disorders. Side effects have been reported by many people including headaches, insomnia and even seizures from aspartame consumption.

The FDA and the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA), however, continue to insist that the sweetener is safe.

You can’t imagine how hard soft drinks sweetened with Aspartame are on your body.
A must-see for anybody with a sweet tooth, this exposé reveals the dangers of Aspartame consumption.

Americans constantly obsess over the latest diet fads and skinny trends, yet we’re one of the unhealthiest nations on the planet.

According to the US Surgeon General, obesity plagues more than 30% of Americans, killing over 300,000 people every year! Heart disease, cancer, and diabetes are also all on the rise, with one of the main culprits in this disturbing trend being sugar. Almost 20% of our daily calorie intake comes from refined white sugar. That works out to about 150 pounds of sugar per year!

Consumed in small amounts, sugar actually helps your metabolism and supplies a quick boost of energy. In excess, sugar adds nothing but empty calories to your body. Many people have recognized this and now opt for sugar free alternatives, allowing for the rise of the artificial sugar industry. The most prevalent artificial sugar in our food supply today is called aspartame, which is also recognized as NutraSweet or Equal. Aspartame has made its way into more than 6,000 products including almost all diet sodas, chewing gum, frozen desserts, yogurt, and even vitamins and cough drops.
200 times sweeter than sugar, aspartame is a combination of two amino acids: aspartic acid and phenylalanine.

Even though the safety of aspartame has been affirmed by the Food and Drug Administration 26 times in the past 23 years, the FDA has received more complaints about adverse reactions to aspartame than any other food ingredient in the agency’s history. In fact, at least 30% of the US population is sensitive to even moderate doses of aspartame and may suffer several symptoms. Immediate reactions include severe headaches, dizziness, attention difficulties, memory loss, throat swelling, and seizures.

Aspartame, the artificial sweetener found in many diet sodas and used as an ‘alternative’ sweetener, has been found recently to have detrimental – specifically, cancerous – effects.

Big money in the food and drug administration. Working together to make us addicted to the poison they sell to us. And then lie to us that we need drugs to help with health conditions. All about the DOLLAR SIGN..$$$$$$$$$$$$$

  2. Barbara January 18, 2012 at 10:32 am

I do not believe a thing the food and drug says about anything and I cannot believe that people keep buying all that junk with aspartame in it. Jamie u are right its all about the $$$$$$, we have to take responsibility for what we put in our mouths.

Diet drinks have been shown (via a televised test in the UK) to actually increase appetite and therefore calorie intake.

If our government is involved in something that is for the benefit of us we should question them…we are the least of their concerns. We need smaller government and not bigger government…they are involved in too many aspects of our lives and making decisions that are not for our benefit. If told it is a good thing….Don’t drink the kool-aid

How much is considered too much? I.e; how many diet sodas can someone drink a day? I have been trying to get my son off of diet Pepsi for years but with a lot of resistance. Would love to see actual figures and more detailed symptoms.

I agree that this should really be more detailed about the actual effects of Aspartame itself in different doses. While the chemicals that make it up may be harmful towards you, chemicals very rarely will have the same effects as the individual chemicals that make them up. Also any substance could cause severe damage if used too much and maybe some of the health issues stem from people assuming that since it says diet you can drink as much of it as you want. I also believe that the amount of activity in your life has a much bigger impact on your personal health then a few unhealthy food choices. I can speak from years of personal experience, and i’m still very young, when i say that running a few miles each day, going to the gym occasionally or just playing some soccer on the weekend will have a much bigger impact on your overall health that simply whether or not you have one or two diet sodas each day. Although i feel i should say that i am in no way an expert and everything i say should be taken with a grain of salt as i speak solely from personal experience and everyone reacts differently to different things.

How much is too much? Why would you want ANY amount of poison in your or your family member’s diet?? It might not be affecting one now, outwardly to our naked eye, but it’s surely affecting you inwardly, whether you know it or not. Why wait until it’s too late to make a change? These are not just “unhealthy food choices” this doctor is speaking of, it’s poisonous chemicals that can make changes that cannot be reversed. Unlike that cheeseburger you may indulge in once in a while… you cannot go “work off” poison at the gym!!

I believe the dangers of aspartame. My husband has been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes for 14 yrs. now. He’s been drinking diet drinks containing aspartame since. For several years now, he’s been jumping out of bed at night with severe leg cramps. Recently I read this can be a side effect of aspartame. He immediately stopped any aspartame intake. The cramps seized IMMEDIATELY! We could NOT believe it! About a couple of months later it was confirmed when he suddenly flew out of bed one night with another cramp. Aspartame instantly came to my mind. So I asked him if he had any diet drinks that day. Sure enough! He had one…..to keep him awake on a 10 hr. drive home! Unbelievable! Steer clear of all aspartame, folks! Drink water. If you must drink sweet coffee, use no more than about a teaspoon. Just don’t indulge in sweet desserts….pass on these!

Several years ago I had an increasing numbness inside the top of my head,.It got really bad. After a few tests it was determined that the numbness was caused by the articial sweeteners I was using, Once I stopped them, the numbness went away. I also have tinnitus which decreased greatly once I quit the sweeteners. Occasionally I have had an artificial sweetner and feel a tingling in my head.and my ear would make more noises. So that was that. Now I use stevia which is made from sugar, or I have a small amount of sugar in my coffee. No one should be using artificial sweeteners. They are the same as rat poison.

I used to suffer from terrible headaches on a nearly daily basis. Then I heard about a connection between aspartame and headaches. I was using Equal in my coffee every morning. Once I stopped using Equal, my headaches ceased almost immediately. I couldn’t believe I was giving myself headaches!

Woodrow C. Monte, PhD, a food scientist, researcher, and Professor Emeritus of Food Science and Nutrition at Arizona State University, has just published a comprehensive book, “While Science Sleeps, a Sweetener Kills,” which is now available on Amazon.com.

The book presents Dr. Monte’s lifetime of research into the nutritional causes of the major diseases of civilization. His own research, along with the research of hundreds of other scientists, is presented in language the average reader can understand and apply to very easily avoid many of the worst diseases that currently kill the majority of people in the civilized world. Dr. Monte has carefully and thoughtfully pieced together the scientific evidence found in hundreds of scientific studies to show convincingly that the single culprit is methanol – a molecule found primarily in canned fruits and vegetables, tomatoes, cigarette smoke, smoked foods, and the artificial sweetener aspartame. Methanol is converted by the enzyme known as Alcohol Dehydrogenase Class 1 (ADH1) into formaldehyde inside the body’s most sensitive tissues.

It is methanol that makes the aspartame taste sweet, and within ten minutes of consuming it, the methanol is released from its chemical bond. Each liter of diet soda contains the amount of methanol found in a pack of cigarettes, and evidence is mounting that diseases traditionally associated with smoking – most recently, heart disease and stroke – are now being associated specifically with aspartame consumption.

The human body converts dietary methanol into formaldehyde in the stomach, liver, veins and arteries, lungs, pancreas, skin, breast, and brain. Dr. Monte makes a compelling case that it is this process, and the disease that results, that is responsible for the epidemics of a variety of cancers, heart disease, diabetes, autoimmune diseases like Lupus and Multiple Sclerosis, autism, and Alzheimer’s disease that have exploded over the past thirty years since the introduction of aspartame in the summer of 1981.

The book also contains information and documentation showing that the product’s manufacturers and their friends in the Food & Drug Administration knew the dangers posed by aspartame, yet buried the evidence and released it for public consumption despite the risk. Furthermore, they knowingly marketed it to those research had demonstrated were particularly vulnerable to its harmful effects – diabetics and pregnant mothers. Since that time, adult onset diabetes has more than doubled worldwide, with diabetics dying from the major diseases of civilization at a much higher rate than the average population.

Deaths from Alzheimer’s disease, in which formaldehyde inside the brain destroys memory function, have increased 10,000% since 1981. Neural tube birth defects are up around 70% in the same period of time despite efforts to compensate with recommended folic acid.

Dr. Monte has decades of experience in food science and nutrition as a researcher, teacher, inventor, industry consultant and consumer advocate who is committed to food additive safety and the prevention of food borne diseases. He is a dedicated scientist with both a Ph.D. and M.S. in Food Science and Nutrition and a B.S. in Biology. He has been a Registered Dietician, Certified Nutrition Specialist AIN, professional member of the American Chemical Society and emeritus member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In 1985, he was chosen by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars as a Senior Fulbright Scholar. His testimony before Congress was instrumental in the prevention of Sulfites from receiving status of US FDA GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe) and the implementation of mandatory labeling for most foods that contain this dangerous additive.
