Sugar Intake Linked To Gallstone Development

sugar557The gall bladder is the storage organ for bile salts, which are a  cholesterol-based substance that help with the digestion and  absorption of dietary fats. Gallstones are crystals or clumps of  cholesterol that cause pain when the gall bladder contracts in response to food entering the  intestines.

A preliminary study conducted in southern Italy found that people who ate 400 calories or more of refined sugar each day were three times more likely to suffer from gallstones as those who ate no more than 260 calories of sugar. Those who consumed at least 600 calories from sugar were six times more likely to develop gallstones.

Refined sugars are contained in foods such as cakes, cookies, soft drinks and table sugar. A 12-ounce can of soda contains 152 calories (all from sugar).

Are You Eating this Dangerous Ingredient?

a-Dagerious_food-itemBy Gretel H. Schueller

Camembert cheese and buttery croissants are staples of French cuisine, so you’d think France would be the last place where the government would police fat content in food. Yet, in an effort to reduce obesity, France’s Senate recently approved an amendment to triple taxes on products containing one unhealthy fat in particular: palm kernel oil, which is extracted from the palm seed of palm oil trees. (The lower house of parliament still has to vote on the tax.)

It turns out that palm oil is a major ingredient in one beloved treat in France: Nutella. The French, who love to smear the creamy hazelnut-chocolate spread on toast and crepes or just eat it with a spoon, account for 26 percent of world’s Nutella consumption, according to French newspaper Le Monde. The proposed tax has incited outrage among Nutella lovers. As outrageous as the tax may seem to some, the French government may be on to something. Nutella’s maker recently settled a multimillion-dollar U.S. class-action lawsuit brought by a California mother who was shocked by the spread’s saturated-fat content and misleading health claims.

Palm kernel oil sounds harmless and even “natural,” right? And in recent years, it’s been finding its way into many packaged foods as manufacturers look for low-cost oils to replace trans fats. (After federal rules mandated all packaged foods list the amount of heart-damaging trans fats they contain on their “Nutrition Facts” labels, many manufacturers reformulated their products to ferret out the offending fat and earn a better-looking label.) Highly saturated fats turn rancid more slowly, so food companies often use them to help preserve taste and texture. Trans-fat-free–and relatively inexpensive–palm oil fit the bill. Its long shelf life and semi-solid state at room temperature make it appealing to food companies.

How can you figure out if foods you are eating contain palm oil? You want to look on the ingredients list: palm oil is commonly found in packaged cookies, cakes, snacks, bakery goods, crackers and peanut butter. (Sometimes it’s listed as “modified,” “partially hydrogenated” or “fractionated” palm oil, which would indicate trans fats; even if the Nutrition Facts panel indicates zero trans fats, products containing less than 0.5 gram of trans fats can be labeled as trans-fat-free.) Sometimes palm oil is one of the oils listed under the term “vegetable oil.”

But there are 3 really good health and environmental reasons to avoid it:

1. It’s High in Saturated Fats
While unmodified palm kernel oil is trans-fat-free, about 80 percent of its fat is saturated, with about 22 grams saturated fat in each 2-tablespoon serving (for comparison there are 14 grams of saturated fat in two tablespoons of butter). For a 2,000-calorie-per-day diet, that’s the maximum amount of saturated fat you should be eating. Most experts agree that saturated fats raise levels of LDL (“bad”) cholesterol in the blood. That’s damaging to the heart and arteries, since excessive LDL accumulates in artery walls and can trigger inflammation, eventually leading to a heart attack or stroke. (Confusingly, palm fruit oil–also known as palm oil or red palm oil–is rich in a form of vitamin E that preliminary research indicates may help fight cancer and prevent strokes; it is also lower in saturated fat.)

2. It Could Boost Your Appetite
Some saturated fats appear more likely than others to cause cholesterol buildup in arteries. Palmitic acid, which is the main fat in palm kernel oil, is one such fat. In addition, research has shown that palmitic acid caused mice to become resistant to the appetite-suppressing hormones leptin and insulin, which in theory could make them eat more.

3. It’s Bad for the Environment
Anyone who worries about global well-being has yet another reason to avoid palm oil: the process of harvesting palm oil is responsible for significant destruction of rain forests in Indonesia and Malaysia–and threatens the orangutans and Sumatran tigers that live there. According to the United Nations Environment Programme, if the current rate of palm-oil production continues, 98 percent of forests in Sumatra and Borneo will be destroyed by 2022. (Note, Nutella’s palm oil is sustainably harvested.)

7 Ways to Get Rid of the Refined Sugar Habit

By

Increased consumption of sugar has been linked to some serious health issues such as heart diseases and cancer besides the obvious weight issues. It is also believed that our brain releases dopamine which helps to keep our body happy. However, the fact is that every person has unique physical needs. For example, many people do not prefer consuming sweets even in moderation because they don’t feel the urge to have them. However, contrarily, other people constantly nibble on sweet food because their bodies want so.

The dangers of consuming excessive sugar cannot be overlooked which is why we bring for you some incredible ways to get rid of consuming refined sugar:

1. Stop Drinking Sodas and Sweetened Drinks

All soft drinks contain huge quantities of sugar content in them. You consume around 10 teaspoons of sugar in a 12 ounce can. If you can stop drinking these soft drinks you can easily lose a lot of fat. Also, try getting rid of candies and cakes, as these contain the highest amount of sugar and carbohydrates both of which are dangerous for your health.

2. Avoid Consuming or Buying Packaged Foods

All sorts of organic packaged food are rich in sugar content. It is much better to prepare your own snacks such as homemade popcorns over the stovetop. You can even consume raw fruits and vegetables as snacks.

3. Choose Wisely When Eating Out

Whenever you choose to eat out, avoid desserts that are prepared using sugar. Instead, go for desserts prepared using fresh fruit and natural sweeteners such as honey. Prefer fruit smoothies, fruit salads, and other salads prepared using less sugar content and healthy dressings.

4. Try Going Sugar-Free At Least for a Week

This could be the best way to know how much sugar content your body needs on average. Go sugar-free for at least a week so your body starts adapting to the dietary change. This will help you gain a lot of confidence as well.

5. Deal with Sugar Cravings

Succumbing to sugar cravings is the major reason why people collect so much fat around their bodies. You can deal with sugar cravings by opting for foods that have natural sources of sugar. Consume fresh fruit when you wish to eat a bar of chocolate, for example.

6. Restrict You Daily Sugar Intake

You can control a lot of sugar intake by restricting your consumption to up to 2 teaspoons of sugar each day. You can either consume these two teaspoons of sugar at breakfast, during lunch or with snacks at any other time of the day.

7. Enjoy Other Food That You Like

Prepare meals that you like as a substitute for sugar laden food. You can always have healthy yet tasty meals every day. For example, roasted portobello mushrooms  toast nuts, roast squash, prepare dish salad, cook soups and stews, etc. There are several other foods that you can enjoy as well.

Sugar: It’s Not a Food

by Skyscape.org

Have you ever heard that you must eat a good, healthy diet but you’re not sure what that means? You’ll be surprised how many people believe that white bread is healthy because it’s been “enriched.” You may have heard that overweight people are unhealthy and thin people are not. These statements have some truth and some falsehoods in them. If you are more than twenty kg’s overweight, then you are putting stress on yourheart and joints The more obese you become beyond that the more damage you cause. On the flip side if you are remaining thin because of unnatural eating habits then you are also harming yourself.

When studying nutrition some definitions of words are so loosely used that its important to clearly define them.

Diet – is the types of food you eat on a regular basis. Many people think the word “diet” applies exclusively to those foods eaten when you are trying to lose weight. That is one of the meanings of the word “diet” but it’s not the one we are using here. Healthy-nourishing, able to sustain life. Sustain-continuing, keep going.

If you want your body to be well, have lots of energy and remain slim you have to work at it and work sensibly. The majority of your diet must contain nourishing, life-sustaining food. Whenever you have to make a food choice you must always ask yourself three questions:

1) Is it nourishing?
2) Does it sustain life?
3) Will it cause any harm?

The first thing you need to understand about your body is that your cells are continually being replaced. Millions of cells that make up blood, lung tissue, fingernails, eyelashes etc. are constantly being made and old dead cells removed. If you supply the incorrect food to your body it starts to fall apart. You can’t make blood or lung tissue by living off sausages, fried chips, burgers, chocolate shakes and sweets. Your body can’t make new cells to replace those that have died if you spend most of your time depriving your body of the fuel it needs

Paraffin is a fuel. It works well in lamps and people use it in paraffin stoves to cook their food on. However if you filled up your car’s petrol tank with paraffin you’d blowup the engine. Why? Because that fuel is unsuitable for motor vehicles.

Some people nibble on chocolates or sweets throughout the day to stop themselves from feeling hungry. Sugar does supply some energy but if you are using sugar to ward off hunger pangs and depriving your body of proper nutrition then your body is slowly deteriorating. Sugar is devoid of nutrients. It is highly refined and causes havoc with your blood-sugar levels, pancreas and immune system — all of which need nourishing food.

That leads us to look at nourishing. The majority of your food must be nourishing. In your twenties your body can cope with junk food and lots of sugar. It does this by slowly removing the vitamins, minerals and other nutrients it needs from your blood, teeth and bones. If you don’t feed your body nourishing food to replace what your body is using up then suddenly things start to go wrong.

Some women who want to stay thin use one of the most dangerous drugs to keep their bodies slim and shapely- sugar. If you fool your body into believing it has been fed by giving it sugar, you don’t get hungry. However if you are doing this daily then your body will start removing the nutrients it needs by breaking down cells and recycling those nutrients to build new cells. The big problem with this is that nutrients are used up and unhealthy, nutrient -deficient cells start being made. These cells cannot function properly. It’s like a dot matrix printer whose ribbon no longer has ink. The printer continues to go through the motions but the results are unsatisfactory as no-one can read the work. When your body becomes depleted of nutrients all types of weird problems and diseases show up.

Increased nervousness and worsening PMS symptoms. Lack of energy, tiredness and headaches. You start bruising easily because your capillary walls are weak allowing blood to seep into the surrounding tissues Chronic constipation which leads to piles. Your immune system works badly as sugar depresses it, so you get sick more often and for longer periods of time. Breast cancer has been linked to a high intake of refined sugar.
